An online poll by Retiresavvy.co.uk of over 2,000 Britons has found that 59% expect to still be working in their retirement.
18% of those expect to end up in full time employment even after they’ve reached retirement age and 25% are planning on working part time to boost their retirement income.
Retiresavvy.co.uk is an online community dedicated to helping people plan for and make the most of retirement and later life. It was created and is supported by Skipton Building Society.
The site found that the average retiree gets bored of life in retirement just 10 months after leaving work and they will often look for other ways to fill their time. 36% of Brits hope to be busy helping others in their spare time, while 16% of those using their new found freedom and time to put the skills they have learnt from years of working to help others through volunteering.
Meanwhile, 21% say they will be helping those closer to home by providing regular childcare for their grandchildren and even caring for their own parents.
Andrew Sheen from retiresavvy.co.uk, said: “You often hear younger people talking about their aspirations for later life, their dreams of travelling the world and enjoying a relaxing retirement. But as they get older they realise this isn’t always going to be the reality for them.
“For some, this is a choice – but for others it is not, and their hands are forced by financial or personal circumstances that prevent them from stopping work, no matter how much they’d like to.
“For others this new reality can be simply due to wanting to help out family members, or because the retirement boredom has set in. But what is clear from our research, is that retirement is what you make of it, be it relaxing, volunteering, supporting the family or even going back to work – and planning ahead is key.”
